Traditional Joinery, Working Strength

Dowel rail fence is post-and-rail built the craftsman’s way: rail ends shaped and fitted through bored posts, like a mortise-and-tenon joint running the length of your property. The look is unmistakably clean — rails flowing through posts with no brackets, no fasteners, no visual clutter.

It’s not just about looks. The doweled connection is mechanically stronger than face-mounted rails: pressure from leaning stock pushes the rail into the joint, not off of it, and there’s no hardware to rust or work loose over years of freeze-thaw.

What We Build

  • Property boundaries and driveways with heirloom-quality lines
  • Horse and stock fencing — genuine containment with traditional character
  • Entrance runs flanking archways and stone columns
  • Custom heights and rail counts, treated or natural finish

Precision Is the Whole Job

Dowel rail leaves nowhere to hide: bore alignment, rail fit, and post spacing are all visible in the finished fence. Our crew — the same people who mill custom timber in our sawmilling operation — builds dowel rail with the care the style demands, across Bozeman, Livingston, Paradise Valley, and the surrounding areas.

Dowel Rail Fence — Questions We Hear a Lot

What makes dowel rail different from other post-and-rail fences?

The joinery. Instead of fastening rails to the face of the posts, dowel rail fits shaped rail ends into holes bored through the posts. The connection is cleaner-looking and mechanically stronger — there's no hardware to loosen.

Is dowel rail fence strong enough for livestock?

Yes. The doweled connection resists pushing and leaning better than face-mounted rails. With the right height and rail count it's a genuine working fence, not just a decorative one.

How is the wood protected?

Components can be treated for weather, insect, and rot resistance, and construction details like post depth and drainage do the rest. We build for decades of Montana service.
