Maximum Service Life, Classic Montana Design

Treated jackleg takes the fence Montana ranchers have trusted for generations and builds it out of pressure-treated wood — posts and rails that shrug off the rot, insects, and moisture that eventually take down untreated fences.

It’s the right call when:

  • The fence line crosses wet ground, irrigated pasture, or snow-collection zones
  • You want a working fence with the longest possible life and minimal upkeep
  • The property sees real livestock pressure day in and day out
  • You want jackleg’s no-post-hole advantages with modern materials

How We Build It

  • Treated jackleg bucks set at consistent intervals for stability and clean alignment
  • Horizontal rails lapped and fastened to stay tight under snow load and leaning cattle
  • Custom height and rail count for your animals and terrain
  • Straight lines across broken ground — grade changes don’t excuse a wandering fence

Because jackleg rests on the surface instead of in post holes, it handles rock ledge, shallow soils, and frost heave better than set-post fencing — and it can be built nearly year-round, frozen ground included.

Serving Working Ranches Across Southwest Montana

From Bozeman and Belgrade to Livingston, Emigrant, and Gardiner, our crew builds treated jackleg for cattle operations, horse properties, and landowners who want a fence they won’t have to think about again for a long time. Compare with bark-on jackleg if rustic character is the priority, or see the full jackleg fencing overview.

Good to Know

Treated Jackleg Fence — Questions We Hear a Lot

How much longer does treated jackleg last than untreated?

Pressure treatment significantly extends service life by resisting rot, insects, and moisture — the three things that kill wood fences. On wet ground or hard-working fence lines, treated wood is the clear choice for decades of service.

Can treated jackleg be installed in winter?

Yes. Like all jackleg fencing, the bucks sit on top of the ground — no holes in frozen soil. It's one of the best winter fencing projects in Montana.

Treated or bark-on — which should I choose?

Treated maximizes longevity and suits working fence lines and wet ground. Bark-on maximizes rustic character. Both are built with the same solid construction; we're happy to show you examples of each on the estimate visit.
